When the story picks up, the Sentinals have largely devastated North America, and due to their faulty programming have gone rogue. After his death, humans freak out and the Sentinels are activated. Decades in the past, a group of evil mutants (aptly named The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants) assassinated a political candidate that was spewing anti-mutant sentiment and raising questions about how dangerous they could potentially become. Things have taken a terrible turn in the future and only a few surviving X-men remain to attempt to make it right.
